Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has launched a survey to inspect safety standards in buildings in Malé, after it was brought to their attention that many constructions are in violation of regulations.
The survey began on Sunday and will cover all buildings in Malé.
Teams will visit buildings between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays to determine if balconies, stairwells, and terraces have proper railings; elevator shafts and ventilation openings are constructed according to regulations; and buildings providing public services are accessible to persons with disabilities.
In addition to this, survey teams will also visit construction sites for inspections on proper use of hoardings, safety nets, and other necessary precautions, and the use of proper safety clothing for construction workers. The teams will also look into whether proper techniques are being applied in doing ground preparation for foundation works.
These efforts follow recent accidents and deaths due to failure to observe safety requirements in buildings and construction sites. This year, a child died and an elderly person was injured after falling down elevator shafts.
