President, First Lady donate over MVR 700,000 to single mothers

President’s official residence Muleeaage has announced that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have provided over MVR 700,000 as allowance to single mothers.

The MVR 1,000 allowance per child below the age of 18, born between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2012, was launched last Thursday.

A Muleeaage official told Sun Media that to date, the allowance had been provided to 790 children of 521 single mothers.

The private donation by the President and the First Lady covers the whole country.

Over 3,000 women were registered as single mothers at the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) by 31 December 2012.
