The Government has started providing financial aid to those affected in the recent rain in Addu City.
Finance Minister Abdulla Jihad told Sun Media today that a team from the Finance Ministry and Disaster Management are operating in Addu City inspecting the damages and providing financial assistance.
Minister Jihad said that the money is being provided under a certain regulation.
And so if the damage is below MVR 20,000, the Government would provide 50 percent. And if the damage is above MVR 20,000, Minister Jihad said that the Government would be providing 75 percent.
Deputy Minister of the Housing Ministry, Abdulla Ziyad said that the biggest damages in the Addu flood were to the private property of the people. He said that the damage to property is estimated at about MVR three million and it is difficult to say the exact cost of damages.
Deputy Minister Ziyad said that some houses were flooded up to six inches in the recent rain in Addu City.
“About 130 Bedroom Sets have been destroyed. Then, rooms have been affected by water up to six inches. Then, the water entered to 400 houses. 300 of those houses had significant amount of water.” Ziyad said.
