Addu flooding damage cost could reach MVR 3 million

Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has said that the damage caused to private property in recent flooding could be as high as MVR 3 million.

Deputy Minister of Housing Abdulla Jihad told Sun Media on Wednesday, “About 130 bedroom furniture sets have been damaged, as water up to 6 inches were experienced in some bedrooms. Flooding was experienced in about 400 houses, 300 of which are severe cases.”

He said that investigations so far have revealed that drain pipes were blocked, and recommended installing pump systems in all islands.

Presently only one island in Addu Atoll has a pump system, which is also non-functional.

The islands of Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo experienced flooding following heavy rain on 24 November 2015. The water has since been drained by Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

Addu City Council has opened a donations box to help the victims.
