Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor has been charged with terrorism – a charge that, if proven, would result in a jail sentence of 10 to 15 years.
An official from Prosecutor General’s Office on Wednesday informed “Sun” that Adeeb had been charged with terrorism in the case against him owning a pistol.
Head of Criminal Investigation Department, Chief Superintendent of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed said that they had received testimony from some individuals who say Adeeb kept the pistol in his apartment. And that they had hesitated to inform police then because of the “situation” at that time.
Adeeb has been charged with terrorism under Terrorism Act which was compiled in 1990.
Other charges against him include unauthorized ownership of a pistol and involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation corruption scandal along with former MMPRC chief Abdulla Ziyath.
Police are also looking into his suspected involvement in the explosion onboard presidential speedboat “Fininfenma”, which the government has declared as an assassination attempt of President Abdulla Yameen.
