Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon has said that a lot of effort had been made by Maldivian government to stop violence against women.
In a statement released on Wednesday on occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, she said that she commended the work carried out by international community to drive attention to stopping violence against women with urgency and commitment.
“The Maldives itself has made significant efforts in preventing violence against women; the Sexual Abuse and Harassment Prevention Act, the Sexual Offences Act, the Domestic Violence Prevention Act and the draft Gender Equality Bill strengthens our legal framework to prevent violence against women,” read the statement.
She also said that civil society and non-governmental organization were working continuously in partnership with government to prevent violence against women. And that government was fully committed to work both nationally and internationally to stamp out the problem.
Minister Dhunya also said that the government was committed to addressing the root cause of violence against women by investing in gender equality and women empowerment.
November 25 is celebrated as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the campaign for this year- titled “Orange the World” will continue for 16 days – coming to an end of International Human Rights Day.
