Corruption needs to be eliminated from PPM, government: Maumoon

Former Maldivian President and President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said that some people had destroyed themselves in face of material possessions and monetary gain, and that corruption needed to be eliminated once and for all.

Speaking during ceremony held at STELCO on Sunday to celebrate two People’s Majlis members and some councilors joining PPM, Maumoon said that love for material possessions needed to be cut down.

“…we also need to eliminate corruption. Once and for all. From inside the party as well as outside. From inside government institutions as well as non-governmental institutions. It’s unacceptable. This party was founded with the agenda of fighting corruption,” he said.

He said that the topic had been talked about during party meetings and demonstrations, and that the people had elected the party because they believed in it.

Maumoon said that people had elected PPM because it was a party that worked on eliminating corruption and finding an easier, more prosperous life for them. He said that it was imperative that PPM prove it.

He said that he wanted Majlis members and councilors who joined PPM to keep that in mind.

Maumoon gave a warm welcome to Majlis members – Biledhdhoo MP Ahmed Mubeen and South-Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Ahmed, as well as Adh. Fenfushi Island Council members who joined PPM.

Tuesday’s ceremony was attended by President Abdulla Yameen, PPM Vice President – Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla and PPM Parliamentry Group Leader – Vilimale MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, as well as PPM-aligned Majlis members and cabinet ministers as well as other ordinary PPM members.
