10-day remand set for Hassantey

Remand period for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Majlis member and R. Inguraidhoo constituency President Hassan Ahmed (Hassantey) – who was arrested for leading prayers wishing for ill of some high-ranking government officials – has been set for 10 days.

The remand was set Tuesday afternoon.

Hassantey was arrested under court order on Monday. Police information officer informed “Sun” that Hassantey was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation, but did not divulge any details regarding the investigation.

Hassantey’s arrest comes after Islamic Ministry warned of legal repercussions to those involved in the prayer continued.

Islamic Ministry had said such prayers were a violation of laws supporting religious unity in the country and that it would create unrest within the society.
