Opposition party – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Majlis member and R. Inguraidhoo constituency President, Hassan Ahmed (Hassantey) has been arrested for suspected involvement in prayers at Islamic Center after Friday prayers, wishing for ill will of some people – which government has deemed illegal.
Police information officer Ismail Ali informed “Sun” that Hassantey had been arrested on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation. The official refrained from divulging any details regarding the investigation.
“Sun” has been informed that Hassantey was arrested in relation to the issue of the controversial prayers being said even after the government had warned of legal ramifications if it continued.
Islamic Ministry, in a statement, had said that some people were praying for the ill of some at
Islamic Center after Friday prayers. And that legal action would be taken against those who participate if it continued.
Islamic Ministry had said such prayers were a violation of laws supporting religious unity in the country and that it would create unrest within the society.
