MDP proposes 11 revisions to Projected State Budget 2016

Opposition party – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has proposed 11 revisions to the MVR 27.257 billion Projected State Budget 2016.

People’s Majlis members, on Monday, were allowed to propose revisions to budget after Budget Committee revealed their report on the budget.

Some of the revisions proposed by MDP:

• MVR 20 million from contingency budget to be apportioned to fishermen.

• Sewage systems to be established in all Maldivian islands by end of 2016.

• No tax to be taken on money sent out of the country to their families by foreign expatriates.

• MVR 50 million from contingency budget to be apportioned for subsidy on electricity.

• MVR 100 million to be cut from money apportioned to Home Ministry, and benefit for single mothers to be raised to MVR 5,000 per month.

• MVR 200 million to be cut from money apportioned to Home Ministry, and benefit for people with special needs to be raised to MVR 5,000 per month.

MDP has now received approval for their revisions.

Member of Budget Committee on last Thursday voted to pass the budget as it had been proposed by government.

Though it had been proposed that money allocated for independent institutions be increased while the budget was under review by Budget Committee, members in the end voted to allocate a further MVR 20 million from contingency budget to Supreme Court, Civil Court and Criminal Court.
