Tsunami Monument removed

The Tsunami Monument at Raalhugandu (Surf Point) area has been removed.

The monument to the lives lost in the 2004 tsunami is set to find a permanent home at the South West Harbor of Malé City.

Director General of Public Works, which is under the Housing Ministry, Mohamed Afeef Hussain told Sun Media today that they have decided to move the Tsunami Monument to the South West Harbor by the end of next month. Afeef said that when the monument is relocated, a park would be developed in the area.

Afeef said that until it’s final destination at the South West Harbor, it is to be kept and the grounds of Dharubaaruge. He said that some repairs would be done on the monument during it’s stay there.

The Tsunami Monument is being relocated since the South East side of Malé City would be connecting to the Malé-Hulhulé Bridge. The bridge, also named China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, would be connecting to Hulhulé at the end of the runway.

The Tsunami Monument was built in the memory of the lives of the Maldivians lost in the 2004 tsunami triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. While 82 people died in the Maldives and many went missing.
