Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel has said that they have commenced taking action against Councils which violate the law.
Dr Jameel said that no action was taken against these Councils before due to the lack of proper regulations on how the Councils should be operated; but now that the regulations are drawn up, action will be taken against those who violate the law.
“Some Councils act in conflict with the Constitution and laws. The Board of LGA has enforced standards for action to be taken against these Councils. The regulation for how Councils should be operated all over the country has also been completed,” Dr Jameel said.
He said that the regulation on the policy of Councils has been enforced, and that 25 municipal regulations to be followed by Councils have been sent to Attorney General for advice.
He also said that four steps must be followed in taking action against Councils, and if the Council fails to comply after the four steps, it will be dissolved.
“The first step is to hold discussions to resolve the issue. If this fails, they will be advised in writing. Next step is to notify them that legal action will be taken against them. The last step is to take the matter to court to abolish the Council,” Dr Jameel said.
He said that action has been taken against some Councils under the new regulation.
