Maldivian in ICU after being attacked in Sri Lanka

A Maldivian man who was attacked in Sri Lanka yesterday is in critical condition and receiving treatment in the ICU at a Sri Lankan hospital.

The victim has been named as Nooraddin, 45, Canarymaage, Thaa Vilufushi.

Vilufushi Council President Ibrahim Shafiu cited family members and said that Nooraddin was attacked near the American Embassy in Colombo while he was on his way home after shopping.

“How he was attacked and what was used remains unclear. No family members were present at the scene of the attack. The victim is unconscious,” Shafiu said.

Nooraddin stopped in Sri Lanka to visit family members while on his way to India.

A family member has said that Nooraddin was first treated at another hospital, and moved to the current hospital with assistance from the Maldivian High Commission in Colombo. He added that the High Commission has also made arrangements to ensure the treatment is covered by Aasandha insurance scheme.

The family also cited the hospital and said that Nooraddin’s condition is improving.

The case is under investigation by Sri Lankan police.

“Some family members have gone to meet with the police. Police told us earlier that Nooraddin was attacked from behind, in the head, and thrown into the vehicle. Police are also going through CCTV footage. We will have more information when the family members return,” a man speaking on behalf of Nooraddin’s family said.
