Lawyer of Former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb, who is under arrest for the investigation of the explosion on board the Presidential Launch explosion, Hussain Shameem has said that Adheeb’s investigation towards the crime of murder.

In a press conference today at Mookai Suites about the investigation on the former Vice President, lawyer Hussain Shameem said that in the investigation against Adheeb to going towards Section 110 of the penal code.

Section 110 of the Penal Code:

Section 110 – Murder

(a) Offense Defined. A person commits an offense if he knowingly causes the death of another person.

(b) Reckless Murder. A person commits an offense if he recklessly causes the death of another person under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life.

(c) Felony-Murder Rebuttable Presumption. The trier of fact shall presume, subject to rebuttal, the existence of the recklessness and extreme indifference required in Subsection (b) if:

(1) the person is engaged in or is an accomplice in the commission, attempt to commit, or flight after commission of

(2) any violent offense.

(d) Grading. The offense is a Class 1 felony.

(e) Definition. “Violent offense” means any offense likely to cause bodily injury.

If a person is convicted under Section 110 of the penal code, that person can be sentenced according to Islamic Sharia or be sentenced to life in prison.

When asked if he suspects that Adheeb is being pushed towards a death sentence, Shameem said that the investigation is led by someone who is fond of giving out death sentences. And so he is concerned about the direction of the investigation.

“The person in charge of the investigation is someone who is very interested in giving death sentences. So we are highly concerned by the direction of the investigation.” Hussain Shameem said.

Indicating to the suspension of three lawyers of the former Vice President, Shameem said that the suspension of lawyers without a reason is something he is very concerned about. He said that more lawyers would be hired as Adheeb’s lawyers keep getting suspended.

Lawyer Shameem said that Adheeb’s family gets to meet him via phone. He said that the family is forced to go to Dhoonidhoo to meet him and then talk via phone in two separate rooms. Shameem said that talking via phone is not trusted since the conversation can be listened into.

“Can’t meet directly with a person who is detained. It is arranged behind a room or a curtain. Then, talking through the phone. With a phone; I’m saying Ahmed Adheeb is inside a room and the family has to talk though a phone.” Shameem said.
