Member of the PPM Parliamentary Group, MP for the Maduvvari constituency Mohamed Ameeth has said that Income Tax must be introduced to complete the taxing system.
Speaking at the state budget committee for 2016, MP Ameeth said that he wants to know why Income tax has not been introduced and that income Tax must be introduced to complete the taxation system.
MP Ameeth, a member of the Economic Committee of the Parliament, said that the Finance Minister Abdulla Jihah must explain to the Parliament why the income tax is not being collected.
“The question is, why haven’t we been able to introduce the income tax? If there is a reason for not implementing it, the Finance Minister must explain that reason to this committee.” MP Ameeth said.
He said that when the budget comes in, rather than depending on the income from selling islands and dredging, thinking should be changed to gain income by completing the taxation system.
Speaking at the budget committee, MP for the North Kulhuduffushi constituency, Abdul Gafoor Moosa said that the best way to get income for the state at this time is introducing income tax. MP Gafoor also said that instead of taking tax from the poorest man, taxation focused on the rich must be introduced.
“Income tax would bring in income equal to all the things mentioned now.” MP Gafoor said.
Five years ago, in the Presidency of Mohamed Nasheed, it was announced that the implementation of income tax was decided upon. A bill was brought to the Parliament in the name of Income Tax.
