Independent Institutions Committee of People’s Majlis on Sunday approved all four names nominated by President Abdulla Yameen to National Integrity Commission (NIC).
All four nominees were given the ‘yes’ vote after they all received makes of over 75 %.
The four nominees are Yoosuf Maaniu Mohamed – G. Atha, Mohamed Faruhad – Hasankareege of S. Meedhoo, Hassaan Hameed – Gulisthaanuge of B. Eydhafushi, and Al-usthaza Khadeeja Abdulla – Dhilsaadhu of H.dh. Nellaidhoo.
President Yameen had originally sent five names for consideration as NIC members. The name of Mariyam Zeeniya of M. Hawai was withdrawn last Thursday without any official reason given for the withdrawal.
Article 9 of NIC Act states that five members needed to be appointed to NIC, and that the members had to be appointed by President, under the advisement of People’s Majlis.
NIC will have authority over four government institutions – Maldives Police Service, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Maldivian Correctional Service, and Maldives Customs Service.
Responsibilities of the Commission include overseeing and law enforcement institutions and investigating unlawful activities, as well as investigating anyone suspected of taking part or planning to take part in an unlawful activity.
