Committee backs Enas as HRCM President, Shifaq as VP

Independent Institutions Committee on Sunday backed President Abdulla Yameen’s decision to make Aminath Enas as President, and Shifaq Mufeed as Vice President of Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).

The decision was made with the approval of majority of Committee members present at the meeting.

Members said Enas and Shifaq fit the criteria for being a HRCM member, stated in Article 6 of HRCM Act.

As per amendment to Article 8 of HRCM Act last year, authority to appoint President and Vice President of HRCM was transferred to President.

The appointments, however, also needed the approval of People’s Majlis.

Enas and Shifaq were appointed HRCM members last August.
