The daughter of the former President, Mohamed Nasheed, Meera Laila Nasheed has said last night that the Judicial System of the Maldives have been corrupted and hopes that the former President, her father, would be freed soon.
Speaking at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the United Nations, Meera said that the charge against her father from the Government was only a political one. And said that the Maldivian Judiciary has been corrupted and the number of proceedings against regulations in the trial of her was astonishing.
Meera also repeated the concern from the family of the President Nasheed for the safety of the former president. And describe President as a father and a close friend. And she said that her hope is to free her father as soon as possible.
The former President’s Daughter noted that the Government assigned Cherie Blair to represent the Maldivian Government in the case against the Maldivian Government at the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and said that she hopes that U.N. Working Group would make a just decision.
“I hope that UN’s Working Group will come to a transparent and fair decision. I also hope that the Government would respect and follow the outcomes of the Working Group’s decision” Meera said.
Meera spoke at the U.N. at the opportunity given by “Freedom Now”, an organization that facilitate representation for arbitrarily detained individuals.
President Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison in March 2015 for ordering the abduction of the Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed in 2012 as the commander in chief, during his presidency.
