AG calls to bring perpetrators in Mahfooz stabbing to justice

Attorney General Mohamed Anil has urged the police and the prosecutor general to take immediate action to bring the perpetrators behind stabbing lawyer Mahfooz Saeed to justice.

In a statement issued today, Anil expressed sadness over the fact that a lawyer has become the victim of such heinous attack, and said that the incident would pose challenges to the service of lawyers and the progress of the justice system.

“There is a need to expedite action to ensure such incidents are not repeated, and this institution will not hesitate in our duties in this regard,” read the statement.

Mahfooz, a member of former president Mohamed Nasheed’s legal team, was stabbed at around 5:00 p.m. on 4 September 2015 while he was in the backseat of a motorcycle on Maaveyo Magu, by two people on another motorcycle.

He was taken to Sri Lanka for further treatment last night.

No one has been arrested yet.
