Ministry of Housing an Infrastructure has said that work is ongoing to remove the decorations put up on the streets of Malé for the 50th Independence Day celebrations.
Minister of State for Housing and Infrastructure Hassan Rasheed told Sun Online that efforts in this regard have begun, and have not been completed.
He said that the ministry would remove all items with no regard to which party they belong to, as the duration permitted to have decorations on the streets has now expired.
He added that everyone was advised to prioritise safety when putting up the decorations.
A young woman died after being hit by a street post used for decorative lights near the Public Works building on Izzuddin Magu, on Saturday night.
Housing Ministry said that the post fell after it was hit by a speeding container truck.
Azfa Zuhair, 24, was hit by the falling post while passing by on the backseat of a motorcycle.
She lost consciousness and passed away in the hospital at 2:28 p.m. on Sunday, as a result of injuries to the head and spine.
