A group has attempted arson in Haa Dhaalu Neykurendhoo on wooden material gathered to build a boat that resembles the Kalhuohfunmi, the sailing boat used by Mohamed Thakurufaanu in his endeavour to free the country from Portuguese occupation.
Neykurendhoo Council President Mohamed Sizan told Sun Online that the attack was stopped by security officials present at the scene, before the material caught fire.
No suspects have been identified.
The case was immediately reported to police by Neykurendhoo Council.
Police said that the case was reported at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, and is under investigation.
There was no major damage, said police.
The cost of the project to build the Kalhuohfunmi lookalike is estimated at MVR 1,500,000.
