Fishing boat sinks in Mal

A 48-foot fishing boat has sunk in the harbour near the Fish Market in Malé.

The captain of Noonu Landhoo boat, Muranga 2, Mohamed Rasheed, told Sun Online that it sank because the pump stopped working after a pipe got disconnected.

Three crew members were sleeping onboard when the boat began to sink at around 3:05 a.m. Thursday.

“By the time they woke up, the boat had sunk halfway,” the captain said.

The crew members were trying to pull the boat back to the surface when he got to the scene, but to no avail.

The captain said that it was a great loss, and work is still ongoing to pull the boat out of the water.
