Committee passes the amendment to abolish the Disaster Management Center and create a new institute

The National Security Commission of the Parliament has decided to pass the bill to the Disaster Law abolishing the National Disaster Management Center and establish National Disaster Management Authority with more responsibilities.

The bill of Disaster Management by the MP for Dhiggaru constituency, Faaris Maumoon was passed by the unanimous vote of the committee.

The bill says that the National Disaster Management Authority has to be established within 30 days of the bill’s ratification.

And with it’s establishment, the National Disaster Management Center would be abolished moving all it’s employees, supplies and all other relevant items would be under the National Disaster Management Authority.

The President is to assign the Chief Executive and the Deputy Chief Executiveof the Disaster Management Authority. And the staff of the Authority would be selected by the Civil Service Commission.

Responsibilities of the National Disaster Management Authority:

- Work with the relevant Government entities during disasters

- Plan procedures and regulations to minimize dangers related to disasters

- Oversight of disaster management as the organizer

- Be active as the organizer of disaster management

- Specialize in disaster management

- Research and information gathering on disaster management

- Function as an entity that advise and consult on disaster management to Government entities, councils, organizations, independent institutes and independent citizens

The bill says that a National Disaster Management Council that consists of the President and all the cabinet Ministers must be created with 30 days from the ratification of the bill.

The purpose of this council is to create policies and make decision redarding reduce damages during disasters, preparations, respond to disasters, recovering from disasters.

MP Faaris said that he presented such a bill to the Parliament to protect the Country, the environment, the people and their property from “dangers and disasters.”
