Hope is for there to be Maldivian doctors and nurses in the hospital: Afeef

The happiest day would be to see Maldivian doctors and nurses to provide healthcare services in the Tree Top Hospital – and that is what we hope for, said Tree Top Investments director Champa Hussein Afeef.

During ceremony held on Thursday to lay the foundation of the tertiary hospital being built in Hulhumale’, Champa Afeef – who is among the first to introduce tourism to Maldives – said that nurses and doctors who study in Maldives would be sent abroad for additional training with the help of Malaysian company Ramsay Sime Darby – the company that has been assigned the task of managing the hospital.

The huge 159 bed hospital is to be built in to two blocks. Tree Top Investments has stated that one of the blocks will be specialized for patient care while the other will provide employee accommodation.

The company said that accommodation would also be made available to family members of patients admitted in the hospital.

Afeef said that there would be no need for Maldivians to beg for Visas once the hospital was established, and that treatment for serious illnesses would be provided in the hospital.

The hospital will be counted among the best in the region, said Afeef.

Afeef said that the USD 80 million (MVR 1,233.6 million) needed for the hospital was funded through loans taken from Bank of Maldives and HSBC.

“We thank the board of both the banks for providing us with the loan, and for your confidence in us,” said Afeef.

Construction work on the historic hospital has been assigned to Turkey-based company ALKE Turmaks, while management of the hospital has been assigned to Malaysian company Ramsay Sime Darby.

“This is something we do not know how to do,” said Afeef when asked why both the tasks were assigned to foreign companies.

Construction work on the hospital, which will provide treatment for illnesses that are not treatable in Maldives is expected to be complete by November, 2016. The hospital will be open to business on March 1, 2017.
