Police have requested from Elections Commission to take action against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as allowed under the regulation on political parties, subsequent to receiving complaints regarding a protest held by MDP near Bandaara mosque, during which loudspeakers were used, last Wednesday.
Police said that case was submitted to Elections Commission yesterday.
Police also said that complaints were received indicating that people performing prayers at the mosque, as well as people working in the private offices located in the area, were disturbed during the protest.
Police said that complaints were even received from Supreme Court, indicating that their work was disrupted as a result of this protest. Traffic in the area was affected, and it was observed to be a nuisance to the general public. As this is against the behavioural standards which must be upheld by political parties, the Police requested Elections Commission to take action against MDP.
Elections Commission Deputy President Ahmed Fayaz said tonight that he is not yet informed of this case, and that he will find out on Sunday when offices open.
Attempts to obtain MDP’s comment on this issue were unsuccessful.
