One of the men charged with assaulting a Police officer at the opposition protest on 1 May has confessed to the crime.
Mohamed Shinaan of Sh. Goedhoo confessed to the crime at today’s hearing at the court. He admitted to kicking the Police officer.
“I hit him twice.” Shinaan said.
After he confessed, Shinaan asked the court to release him from Police custody.
Although Shinaan confessed, Laushan Ahmed Zahir, who was charged with him, pleaded not guilty.
When asked by the Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed as to why he is refusing to the charge of assault with a weapon, Laushan said that it is because he didn’t do such a thing.
Police Sergent Abdul-Rahman Hussain was attacked on the night of 1 May as he was running near the Iskandhar School on Chaandhanee Magu.
State prosecutor said that since Laushan has pleaded not guilty, the state wants to bring in evidence against him. The prosecutor said that the state would provide two witnesses and videos and pictures of t he assault.
She also said that the state wants the witnesses to be protected.
A total of 13 people have been charged for assaulting the Police officer.
