President explains loss of confidence in VP

President Abdulla Yameen has explained the reasons behind the loss of confidence in Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.

The President spoke on this issue at a meeting with MPs of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) at Muleeaage on Tuesday. The meeting lasted about two hours.

President Yameen said that efforts to impeach the VP - who had contributed greatly to PPM’s success in recent elections - is likely to raise questions, and shared information to support his alleged treachery.

To that effect, he showed messages exchanged between Dr Jameel and those who led the anti-government protests on 27 February and 1 May.

Following the meeting, Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa tweeted that President Yameen had confirmed to MPs present at the meeting, and showed Viber messages as proof of the VP’s attempts to overthrow the government.
