An official from the Local Government Authority (LGA) has said that it costs MVR 120,000 to hold a board meeting of LGA and so to reduce the costs, they have decided to hold a meeting once a month.
Talking to Sun Media, the official from LGA said that seven out of the nine members at the board has to come from the atolls to attend the meetings.
“Members tickets, accommodation and other expenses cost more than a Lakh (hundred thousand).” The Official said.
Launch travel fares, air fares and accommodation for members are arranged by LGA. And every board member receives an allowance of MVR 8000.
Although LGA regulations states that two board meetings must be held every month, the regulations have been amended to hold one meeting per month. The change was made in May. Since then there hasn’t been a board meeting.
Under the Local Governance Law, the Councilors have to answer to LGA.
