Tholaal and Azim discussed before the HRCM report

Sun Media has confirmed that a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Ahmed Tholaal and Adam Azim, sibling of the former Defense Minister, Colonel-retired Mohamed Nazim had discussions prior to the HRCM’s investigation report on the Police operation conducted to search the apartment of the former Defense Minister.

A high ranking official from a relative institution told Sun Media that the two discussed before the report was published. He said that Tholaal informed Azim that reports from the HRCM can be used during the trials.

“Tholaal told Azim that that report can be used since the court would be looking for things that went wrong for the appeal process and use lawyers to make contact.” The source said.

When Sun Media asked about the allegation, Tholaal said Azim contacted him to get that report and it was after the report was completed. And no other conversation took place between the two.

Azim said that the report was not written after consulting him. And called Tholaal to share concerns about the report and did so.

“This report was not done after consulting me; I read the report and reported things I noticed. That is my right.” Azim said.

While the HRCM has issued the report and shared with Colonel Nazim’s family, the report says that there are questionable things about the Police search operation conducted at Nazim’s apartment on the night where the pistol was found. And questions why the search was not recorded on video.

But the report says that in total the Police conduct was within the law.

After the pistol was found, the former Defense Minister was tried and sentenced 11 years in prison.
