The Maldives Meteorological Centre has issued the White Alert from the northernmost atoll of Haa Alifu, up to Meemu Atoll .
The Met Office said that the alert was issued at 8:45 a.m., and will be in place until 2:00 p.m. today.
During this period, the region will experience general bad weather and winds are expected to pick up to 40 miles per hour (mph).
Other regions in the country will not be affected by this wave of bad weather, the Met Office said.
The Met Office uses three alerts to warn of bad weather.
White Alert is issued when continuous strong winds between 23 to 30 mph, high tidal waves, and rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres are expected. White Alert signifies no immediate threat.
The Yellow Alert is issued if winds are expected to increase to 30 to 40 mph, while Red Alert is issued for winds exceeding 40 mph. The Red Alert signifies extreme weather.
