Price of case of eggs falls to MVR 450

The price of a case of eggs has fallen to MVR 450 in Malé.

A week ago, a case of eggs was sold for MVR 600; and yesterday, for between MVR 550 and MVR 1,100.

Supply of eggs - one of the most common ingredients used in the preparation of special foods for breaking fast during Ramadan - seems to have increased at the market.

Maldives Customs said that 8,815 cases of eggs were cleared and supplied to shops yesterday alone.

State Trading Organisation (STO) suspended wholesale of eggs yesterday, in a move to control prices.

Head of STO Supermarket Fathimath Ashan said that in the meantime eggs will be sold (retail) at the STO Supermarket, and wholesale will resume on Sunday.

She said that the purpose of suspending wholesale was to ensure wider distribution.

The retail price of an egg is MVR 1.50.

STO was selling egg cases wholesale at MVR 250.
