Bill to forgive traffic fines goes to the parliament next week

The amendment bill to the traffic law to stop the issuing of traffic stickers and forgive all the traffic fines in land transportation have been scheduled to go to the parliament next week.

The bill says that the purpose of the bill by the government is to improve the land transportation system of the country. It also says that the bill would lead to modern steps against illegal driving and parking and give Maldives Police Service the power to impound vehicles.

According to the bill, all the unpaid traffic fines would be forgiven once the bill comes into effect.

While the government’s bill to stop traffic stickers and forgive traffic fines is ready to go into the parliament, the Vice President of the Parliament and the MP for the Hulhu-Henveiru constituency, Moosa Manik has also presented an amendment to the land transportation law.

His amendment calls to increase the traffic fines consecutively.

The bill presented by MP Moosa Manik states that the fine for speeding for the first time would be MVT 1000. The current law states that the fine is MVR 500. The amendment by MP Moosa Manik states that the fine for speeding a second time would be MVR 1500.

But the current law states that the fine for speeding a second time is MVR 750. The amendment states that the fine for speeding a third time would be MVR 2000. And every time after the second time, the speeders would have their driving license suspended for three months.
