Agreement signed for waste management project in Addu City

Ministry of Environment and Energy has signed an agreement with Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) for a waste management project in Addu City.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony at Ministry of Environment and Energy today, by Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim, and Deputy Managing Director of MRDC Ahmed Mamdhooh.

This comes after efforts by Addu City Council to award the project to a company were halted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Speaking at the ceremony, Thorig said that last week, no efforts were made for waste management in Addu City, causing problems in many areas and prompting the government to assign a project to MRDC to tackle the situation.

The cost of the project is MVR 734,792.

In response to a question by Sun Online, Thorig said that Addu City Council has been informed of the government’s decision, and there was no time for discussion as swift action was necessary given the deteriorating situation in the city.

He further said that MRDC will carry out the work while the government seeks a permanent solution to the problem, which could take up to two months.
