First Chinese resort development project inaugurated

The first resort development project in the Maldives by a Chinese company has been inaugurated at a ceremony at Hotel Jen this morning.

The development of the five-star boutique resort at Vaavu Kunaavashi will begin in September, by China’s CJL Private Limited.

The project will see the construction of 71 rooms in total made up of 38 water villas, 32 beach villas, and 1 presidential villa, as well as the establishment of a dive centre, a water sports centre, and restaurants in the island.

The project is expected to be completed in 14 months.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb highlighted the government’s efforts to attract Chinese investors to Maldives.

He said that tourist arrivals from China had increased, and 1.4 million tourists visited Maldives in total in 2014.

Prior to this project, Kunaavashi was a picnic island for locals.
