Release of muder suspect Athif appealed

The early release of Athif Rasheed who has been charged with the murder of Mohamed Aruham has been appealed at the High Court.

The Media Official of the Prosecutor General’s Office told Sun Media today that the case has been sent for appeal today.

Criminal Court said that Athif was released because there was no reason to keep him in custody anymore.

The judge residing over the murder of the Dharumavantha School student, Mohamed Aruham in Lorenzo Park in 2012, Judge Muhuthaaz Fahumee was replaced by Judge Abdulla Didi.

Sources say that the judge was replaced at the request of a family member of Athif Rasheed.

The state has charged Mohamed Sufuyan (G.Dh. Gaddhoo), Athif Rasheed (Male’), Mohamed Visam (L. Maavah) and Mansoor Yousuf (L. Maavah) with the murder of Aruham on 29 May 2012.

Criminal Court has ordered that all of the defendants remain in custody for the duration of the trial.

But at the latest hearing, the defense lawyers requested that they be transferred to house arrest since they have been in custody for a long time.

Regarding the matter, the state prosecutor said that the state wants them to remain in Police custody.

Athif Rasheed was released after the prosecution made that statement.
