State denies Humaam

The state has denied Humaam’s words saying that during the investigation, he was brought to the Prosecutor General’s Office and the state prosecutors forced him to confess to the murder of Dr. Afrashim in court.

But in today’s hearing, Humaam said that he confessed to the murder of Dr. Afrashim when he was forced by the Police and the PG’s Office and he also attempted suicide.

Humaam was given 30 minutes to speak at his hearing at the High Court today.

Speaking at this opportunity, Humaam said that he received different assaults and threats from the Police until he confessed to the murder. He said that he was once woken up from sleep and a high ranking officer of the police threw a Quran translation at him.

“I was shown a picture of Afrashim and was told different things to scare me.” Humaam said. And due to that, he said, he received psychological trauma and attempted self-harm on several occasions and “attempted suicide”. But he did not give details of how he attempted it.

Humaam also presented a letter to the court today from the Correctional Services saying that Humaan needs psychological treatment.

The letter says that Humaan requested a medical report for his psychological issues.

While the state has denied Humaam’s allegations about being forced to confess at court, the state prosecutor said today that Humaam was taken to the PG’s Office not to tell him what to do at court but gain information on how the death of Dr. Afrashim took place.

The defense lawyers asked which circumstances are required for the accused to be brought to the PG’s Office.

And when the prosecution said that they needed time to respond Humaam’s questions, Chief Judge, Ali Sameer said that the state would be given the opportunity to respond and the closing statements would be presented in the next hearing. And that would be the last hearing of the trial.

The Judges on the bench in the case are Judge Abbas Shareef, Judge Abdulla Hammed, Judge Abdul-Qani Mohamed and Judge Shuaib Hussain Zakariya.
