Suood: There is no way to appeal the decisions from the courts in North and South

Former Chief Judge of the State, Husnu Suood has said that the right to appeal decisions made by the courts in the North and South of the country are being obstructed.

Talking to the press today, Suood said that decisions by the courts in the north and south has to be appealed by the High Court branch in the area according to the Supreme Court and to date, there is no such branch established in either the North or the South of the country.

“Magistrate court doesn’t know that the appeal period has been shortened. And there is no procedure for that. The result is the appeal at G.D. Gadhdhoo Court. The Magistrate calls us now and then and say how would they proceed now. He doesn’t know what to do. There is no branch of the High Court in the South. And so he doesn’t where to send the appeal forms.” Suood said.

He said that while there is no branch of the High Court in Addu City and Kulhudhuffushi, the magistrates in those areas doesn’t know the new procedures about the appeal process. And the appeal forms are not available in the atoll, said Suood.

“Through the media we want to alert the relative government institutes, especially the judiciary institutes to set the procedure in such a way that it does not violate the people’s right to appeals.” Suood said.
