Agreement signed for development of resort for Chinese tourists

The government has signed an agreement China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), for the development of a resort dedicated to Chinese tourists in the Maldives.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the government by Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb.

Speaking to the media, Adeeb said that CMEC is expected to invest about $200 million in the Maldives.

He said that such an investment by a prominent Chinese company is great progress for the Maldives.

Most Maldivian resorts are ‘European style’ and the development of a resort tailored for Chinese tourists will help attract more Chinese tourists, said Adeeb.

The first island awarded to CMEC for the development of a resort is Thaa Kalhufahalafushi.

Adeeb said that the feasibility study will be completed and construction will begin before the end of 2015.

At present, tourist arrivals in Maldives is highest from China.
