Police have destroyed MVR 4 million in street value of liquor and alcohol today after six years.
Police destroyed 1200 beer cans, 600 bottles, 60 jerry cans of 20 liters.
After destroying it today at Dhoonidhoo, the Head of Drug Enforcement Department, Superintendent Ahmed Shifan said the alcohol destroyed were from completed cases.
“Alcohol we selected specially because we have seized a lot of alcohol. It is difficult to go deeper into our warehouse without moving the alcohol.” Superintendent Shifan said.
Superintendent Shifan said that the Police receive the question, “what happens to things that the police seize?” and there is a good system in place to look after it. And starting next week, drugs and alcohol would be destroyed every Saturday. And with the current system in place to destroy drugs and alcohol, there is no obstruction to it.
“These things are looked after a specific system no matter which scene or place it was seized from. So there is nothing questionable in the process.” Superintendent said.
He said that forensic investigations go forward with a specific procedure.
He said that this goes forward under the supervision of an independent committee which includes an official from the Prosecutor General’s Office, Attorney General’s Office, a judge from the Criminal Court and two officials from independent institutes.
