President inaugurates

President Mohamed Nasheed has inaugurated ‘Divehi Language Academy’ last night.

Following section 9/2011 of the National Language (Priority) Act, the President appointed 5 members to the Academy. The members appointed to the Academy were Numa Abdur Raheem - G. Naifaru / Male', Rafia Abdul Gadir - M. Magumatheege / Male', Mohamed Amir Ahmed - Husnuheenaage / GDh. Fares Maathodaa, Zeenath Ahmed - Dhanbu Suthulige / ADh. Mahibadhoo and Ashraf Ali - Lilymaage / GA.Nilandhoo.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony held at the National Art Gallery last evening, President Nasheed said that ‘Divehi Language Academy’ is a linguistic academy whose mission is to promote a reasoned inquiry into the nature, origins, and usage of Divehi language. President also said that its primary concern is to develop communications and correspondences, and preserve and promote the use of the national language, Divehi.

President Nasheed noted that following careful observations, the appointment of the members was based upon their academic qualifications, efforts, skills and dedication to linguistics.

President also noted that studying all aspects relating to Divehi language, and its significance to the culture of the society is essential to the development of the Maldives.

Further, President Mohamed Nasheed urged Members of the Academy to be broad minded and open to adaptation of foreign concepts while dealing with the study of Divehi language and coining new words.
