Protesters pull handcarts after police ban four-wheeled vehicles

Opposition parties have used handcarts during a march this afternoon, after police banned the use of four-wheeled vehicles without permission during protests.

Handcarts carrying speakers were pulled by senior officials of parties and members of parliament, including Deputy Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Ameen Ibrahim, Addu-Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam, and Mahchangolhi-North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi.

Previously, protesters used pick-up trucks to transport speakers. The use of four-wheeled vehicles was banned after a pick-up truck going at high speed broke through police lines during a protest on 1 May.

Police said that the purpose of the ban was to ensure safety for security forces, public property, and the general public.
