Mohamed Najah, who was Mariyam Sheereen’s boyfriend at the time of her alleged murder, has been acquitted by Criminal Court of the murder charge.
The court said in its verdict that enough evidence was not presented by the State to prove the charge against Najah.
The State had claimed that the murder took place while Najah was with Sheereen in a room in a house in Maafannu on 20 December 2009.
After the murder, he put her body in a suitcase and transported it on a taxi to a house under construction, Maafannu Angaagiri, the State had argued.
The taxi driver testified in court that Najah took a suitcase on his taxi, and that there was a foul smell in the boot of the car the following day.
Criminal Court said that the cause of Sheereen’s death remains unknown, and doctors had advised to perform a post-mortem examination.
The State had not presented any documents to prove that a post-mortem was conducted, the Court said.
The verdict on this case was issued today, more than three years after the court concluded the hearings.
