Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has said that the children in the atolls do not get the proper healthcare they need.
The press release issued by the HRCM celebrating the Children’s Day said that a survey conducted on children’s rights shows that the children in the atolls do not get the healthcare they need.
“We also note that the proper healthcare required during and post pregnancy is not available. And so the services of a gynecologist are not available in the atolls and there is difficulty getting that service.” The press release said.
HRCM also raised concerns about some parents refusing vaccines to their children and refusing to send their daughters to school.
Today’s press release today also mentioned the child abuse cases reported to the HRCM in the past year. Which includes children’s rights cases, negligence from parents and the state and children’s protection by the parents.
“And among these cases, a large number of sexual abuse cases are reported and most cases involved a family member or someone related to the family.” HRCM said.
HRCM also called for proper punishment to child abusers and protection to witnesses to children related cases to ensure a protected environment for children.
