Council of G.Dh. Thinadhoo has said that the Local Government Authority (LGA) cannot be ordered to find the councilors who were in Male’ on 1 May.
The press release issued on Thursday with the signature of the Vice President of the Thinadhoo Council, Ibrahim Assad and five other councilors say that councilors are representatives of the people with the voice of the people. And so, “taking part in a rally and expressing the concern about the tyranny against the people” is not something the President of the LGA, Umar Naseer should be worried about.
The statement from the Thinadhoo Council also says that the constitution says that any constitutional right can be stayed with a law passed by the parliament.
“We note that the President of the LGA, Umar Naseer does not have the power to stay the constitutional rights of every citizen with a letter.” The statement said.
It says that everyday, going to Male’ at any time is a constitutional right of a councilor like any other citizen and even if any councilors took part in the protest rally on 1 May, it is not a crime.
The President of the LGA and Home Minister, Umar Naseer has said that steps would be taken against any councilor who came to Male’ on 1 May on government expenses.
The Home Minister has asked the Anti- Corruption Commission to look into it.
