Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) have begun investigating if anyone’s human rights were violated in the opposition’s “to end tyranny” protest held last Friday.
A press release from the HRCM today said that they are investigating claims that the protestors arrested were beaten by the Police. The cases include exceeding the necessary amount of force while making arrests and beatings by the Police after arrests.
And while cases regarding packed detention cells, ventilation and heat are presented to the HRCM, they said that the cases also includes delays in medical treatment and delivering packages sent from home.
HRCM has condemned the attack on two Police officers by the protestors. HRCM was denied access to those who were arrested and the Police officers who sustained injuries at the protest.
But they visited the Dhoonidhoo Jail and Male’ the following day.
“We take this opportunity to request the full support to our work from all parties involved. And even in a political unrest, we should respect the human rights of everyone and in no condition should any brutality be carried out.” The statement from the HRCM said.
