Prosecutor General (PG) Muhthaz Muhsin has called on lawyers not to politicise cases, and focus instead on defending their clients.
He told Sun Online in an interview today, that this is crucial to ensure the proper functioning of the justice system.
Earlier today, former President Mohamed Nasheed’s lawyer, Hassan Latheef, said at a press conference that since the period of appeal had expired, Nasheed’s case must now be appealed in the higher court by the PG Office.
Referring to this, Muhthaz said that defendants’ rights will be lost if cases are politicised by lawyers.
He also pointed out that Hassan Latheef said earlier that PG Office does not have the authority to appeal Nasheed’s case.
PG Office only appeals court verdicts that are not in favour of the State.
Muhthaz said that there is no policy in the Maldives, that allows the PG Office to appeal verdicts that are in favour of the State.
