Ministry of Economic Development has fined 22 shops in Malé for employing foreigners as cashiers.
Deputy Minister for Economic Development Adam Thaufeeg told Sun Online that 295 shops were checked, and 49 were identified where foreigners were working as cashiers.
Out of them, 22 have been fined MVR 2,000, said Thaufeeg.
He further said that the ministry will continue conducting checks in Malé as well as other islands via councils, and take action and revoke permits if necessary.
Employing foreigners as cashiers was banned effective 1 April 2015 in a move to create more job opportunities for Maldivians.
