EC warns of action against parties that violate the law at mass rally

Elections Commission (EC) has warned that it would not hesitate to take action against political parties that violate the law at the mass rally planned for tomorrow, 1 May 2015.

President of EC Ahmed Sulaiman said at a press conference today, that the commission had held discussions with relevant political parties, and was not particularly of the view that the rally would be violent.

He said that further discussions would be held before tomorrow, and action would be taken as per existing procedures in the event that unrest breaks out and laws are violated during the rally.

Sulaiman said that political parties’ involvement in illegal activities was a matter of grave concern for EC, and urged everyone to refrain from activities that might disrupt peace and order in the country.

The commission was informed during discussions with political parties that the rally was led and organised by Adhaalath Party, said Sulaiman.

He advised all participants to keep their actions within the boundaries of the law.

Opposition activists are arriving in Malé from across the country for tomorrow’s rally.
