Committee passes to bring forward Penal Code implementation date

The Parliament Committee on National Security has passed a motion submitted by the government, to allow the implementation of the Penal Code sooner.

The amendment to Article 10 of the Penal Code submitted by Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riyaz states that the implementation of the new Penal Code would start on 1 July.

This comes after the parliament earlier passed an amendment to delay the implementation of the Penal Code – also proposed by the government coalition.

MP Riza has also proposed an amendment to Article 521 (d) of the Penal Code, which describes the staff responsible for the implementation of the law. This amendment has also been passed by the National Security Committee.
