Islamic University Bill passed

The Islamic University Bill has been passed with the unanimous vote of the parliament.

The bill, submitted on behalf of the government by Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla, was voted in favour by all 55 MPs present at today’s sitting.

Speaking at the meeting, Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh said that the bill would facilitate the establishment of an Islamic University in the Maldives.

The government said earlier that the Maldives is a Muslim country where the main source of the Constitution is Islam, it is therefore imperative to establish a law detailing the purpose, procedures and responsibilities of such an educational institution, which will help strengthen the country’s Islamic character.
